What does a Tesla Powerwall do?

A Tesla Powerwall is a rechargeable solar battery that stores electricity generated by solar panels to power a house or commercial premises. It also draws and stores electricity from the grid during off-peak hours when the energy rates are low. The stored energy can be used as a backup source during power cuts or during peak hours when the utility rates are high.

Did you know Tesla Powerwalls can also be used without solar. Depending on your electricity tariff, it can be both financially and environmentally beneficial to charge your Powerwall at times when electricity is cheaper (which is generally at times where renewable energy sources are flooding the grid). As will a conventional solar setup, this can also provide energy to the home/business in the event of a power cut.

Powerwalls optimise energy consumption by storing excess energy when available and releasing it during periods of high energy demands to lessen reliance on the main grid.

How does a Tesla Powerwall work?

Tesla Powerwalls work in conjunction with solar PV panels, which harness the abundant power of the sun. Powerwalls store the excess energy generated by the panels (as well as the grid) in a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

The stored energy is converted from direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) by an integrated inverter, which allows it to be used for household appliances.

How much is the installation service?

Every property has unique power requirements, so a full inspection is required to provide an accurate quote. The cost also depends on whether you already have solar panels installed.

To supply and install a single Powerwall in an average-sized home, you can expect to pay in the region of £8,950 plus VAT. Remember, if you install a Powerwall at the same time as a solar system, then you will pay no VAT on either the battery or the solar PV system.

While this is a significant investment for most, the significant cost-savings will easily recoup the cost over time, especially with the Tesla Energy Plan.

FAQs about installing a Tesla Powerwall:

A Powerwall is a slim and compact unit. It can be floor-mounted or wall mounted, in a cool, dry, and ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources (this can be both inside the home or outside).

The location should also provide easy access for maintenance and be near the home's electrical panel for efficient wiring. Installation requires the engineer to wire the unit to the property's electricity system and solar panels and install an integrated inverter*, and typically takes a few hours.
*A device that combines the functions of an inverter and a battery charger into a single unit for greater efficiency.

This depends on the energy consumption of the house and the number of Powerwall units installed. Typically, a single Powerwall can power an average-sized home for approximately 7-12 hours.

A Tesla Powerwall 2 has up to 13.5kWh of storage and can deliver 5kW of power continuously and up to 7kW for shorter periods, representing extremely good value.

Like all electrical technology, the Powerwall's lifespan depends on how it is used and maintained, but they are built to last up to 20 years.

This depends on various factors, such as the amount of solar energy generated and the energy demand in the house. On average, a fully discharged Tesla Powerwall can take approximately 7 hours to charge from a 5 kW solar system, while a 10 kW solar system can fully charge a Powerwall in around 3-4 hours.
