Energy Company Obligation from Cinergi

Energy efficiency… Carbon emissions… Fuel poverty… These are phrases that have, unfortunately, become part of everyday conversation in recent years. The energy crisis is cause for concern for homeowners all over the UK, but there is help at hand in the form of government grants and allowances, such as the ECO scheme.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a government scheme designed to tackle fuel poverty and cut energy consumption. The biggest energy suppliers have targets to introduce energy efficiency measures to hundreds of thousands of fuel-poor households in Great Britain, using ECO funding.

No doubt you have first-hand experience with the rising cost of energy bills, but not every household is fortunate enough to cover the cost of energy-efficient improvements. If you’re wondering if Energy Company Obligation funding can help you, please read our quick and helpful guide.

Cinergi is a team of highly-accredited engineers and has been serving households for over 40 years. We specialise not only in traditional heating systems like boilers but in newer, more efficient energy solutions such as air source heat pumps. We are ECO-registered installers and serve the whole of the south coast. Please contact us here.

What is the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme?

ECO was launched in 2013, and its current iteration is ECO4, which runs until March 2026. It is a government energy efficiency scheme and exists to reduce carbon emissions and ease fuel poverty. Under the scheme, the big energy companies are obligated to promote energy-saving measures to their customers. They also have targets to promote ECO-funded heating upgrades to thousands of energy-inefficient homes.

ECO grants cover or contribute toward the cost of energy-saving improvements, such as insulation and heating system upgrades. ECO funding is available to low-income and vulnerable households throughout the country, providing a crucial lifeline to those who are struggling to keep their homes warm.

Is the ECO scheme free?

For a lot of households, ECO grants cover the entire cost of improvements, so there is nothing to pay. However, your energy company could ask for a contribution towards the cost, so it’s good to shop around.

Who qualifies for ECO funding?

To qualify for ECO support, you must

If you don’t fit the above criteria, you may still be able to apply for an ECO grant under the “flexible eligibility” conditions in your particular region. Local authorities have the power to widen the eligibility criteria to fulfil their own targets, so it’s well worth checking with them.

How can I apply for an ECO grant?

There are a few routes to apply. You could approach your energy company to see if they are participating in the scheme. If so, they will likely run through a series of questions on the phone or direct you to an online form.

Alternatively, you can contact a registered ECO installer such as Cinergi, and we can make an application on your behalf.

Cinergi is a registered ECO installer and can provide various heating system solutions and upgrades.

Upgrade to an air source heat pump

Air source heat pumps are an efficient and cost-effective way to heat your home. They use the heat energy naturally present in the outside air to warm a space, eliminating the need for costly and inefficient fuel sources such as coal or natural gas. In a similar way, ground source heat pumps transfer energy from the ground to heat a property.

Heat pumps are much more efficient than older-style boilers and electric storage heating and can save you hundreds or even thousands off of your energy bill. See how much you could save.

Upgrade to an efficient and modern boiler

If your boiler is more than 10 years old, then you can save money on your energy bills by upgrading it. Newer, condensing boilers are far more efficient, using up to 25% less fuel and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 15%. Condensing boilers are also much better at capturing and recycling waste heat, leading to greater comfort levels in your home.

The current iteration of ECO is ECO4, which was launched in July 2022 and applies to installations from April 2023 to March 2026.

The amount you receive depends on what energy-efficient measures are deemed most suitable by your energy company and how much funding they recommend. Funding can easily reach thousands, and even tens of thousands, of pounds if you qualify for a combination of improvements, such as solid wall insulation and a brand-new heating system.

Unlike other types of grants, ECO funding is not paid to the individual, it's paid directly to the installer.

You will have to inform your energy supplier when applying for ECO funding, but it doesn't have to be your current energy supplier; you are free to shop around. See a list of participating energy suppliers here.

The CERO scheme was part of a former iteration of ECO and offered free insulation measures, but it is now discontinued.

This is part of ECO and refers to the targets set for helping fuel poor households in deprived and rural areas.
